Celebrating in Challenging Times

Today, I'm excited to share a handmade card created for a dear friend's son on his Holy Communion. Now, full disclosure: while I'm not particularly religious, I believe that moments of celebration and connection are worth cherishing, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Picture this: it's early spring 2020, and we're gearing up to celebrate a momentous occasion—the Holy Communion of my friend's son. We took pictures of him and spent hours designing a beautiful invitation for their guests. But as fate would have it, the pandemic had other plans, and the event had to be postponed to September due to contact restrictions. Not only that, but strict regulations meant that even in autumn, we couldn’t be there in person to witness his milestone in church, but luckily, a few friends and close family members were able to gather later that day for a cake party outdoors.

Anyway, what better way to commemorate his special day than with a handmade card? At its center is a die-cut rainbow made from cardstock in the warm hues of fall—dark reds, bright reds, glittery rose golds, oranges, and hints of blues for some contrast. Nestled within the smallest segment of the rainbow is a tiny heart, cut from kraft cardstock. And perched atop the rainbow is a dove, its wings spread wide in a gesture of peace and serenity. The sentiment "Zur Kommunion," meaning "On your Communion," was typed before die-cutting with a typewriter. I also found, that doubling the die-cut helped to distinguish the kraft layer against the background.

I hope you feel inspired to pick up your colorful paper and create something beautiful. Remember, a handmade card is not just a piece of paper - it's a gesture of care that can brighten someone's day - especially in challenging times. Until next time, happy crafting!
